MQP Lunch Time Chess Club

The MQP Chess Club is one of the most successful in the province. Last year we were silver medalists in the Province in Elementary and bronze in Primary.  We are happy to announce that will have lunchtime Chess Club again this year.  It will be held on Tuesday and Thursday between 11:55am – 12:20pm in the Resource Center.

Club Structure: In the past our primary students met on Tuesdays and our Elementary students met on Thursdays. Depending on our enrollment numbers, there may be a slight change to this structure. After registration we will communicate the finalized schedule. We will build our grass root level players during this lunchtime chess session and depending on the players’ level of interest; we will direct them to sources of further instruction and tournament play.

Format: Volunteer(s) will be responsible for distributing and collecting chess sets, to supervise the students and perform minor clean up when the lunch break is over. Volunteer/Parent(s) are NOT required to know how to play chess. Some knowledge of how to move the pieces and setting them up would be preferable. Players usually will match up with their peers for the game. Our chess master Nihad Diverevic will continue providing instruction and the finer points of the game especially to the new players.

Request for Volunteers: To ensure the Club runs smoothly we will need additional Parent Volunteers.  If you can spare half an hour once or twice per month our Chess Club will continue to grow.

In accordance with the Eastern School District Policy on volunteers in schools, a Certificate of Conduct and a Vulnerable Sector Check will be required for all Chess Club volunteers and coaches. This certificate is required for a volunteer position therefore the $35.00 fee is waived.  The form and waiver can be picked up at the office or sent via Email.

The Chess Club increases in popularity each year and without your assistance we would not be able to continue to offer this great activity.  Thanks again for your support!
